  • Our client’s vision for this home was to create a rural retreat - a place to escape, unwind, and reconnect with nature. The home needed to support both shared family time and personal privacy, accommodating multiple generations under one roof.

They were looking for a design that embraced the landscape and provided a sense of calm and separation from the demands of everyday life. It was important that the home offered flexibility, allowing several families to gather while still being able to retreat to private spaces when needed.

  • Designing a Rural Retreat: A Home Grounded in Landscape

The Pavilion House was conceived as a peaceful country retreat, where multiple generations of family could come together and enjoy the surrounding rural landscape. The architecture needed to support both shared time and private retreat, providing space to gather and space to rest.

Pavilion Layout: Privacy and Connection by Design

To meet this brief, we designed the home as a series of separate pavilions, each with a distinct function. These pavilions are connected by glazed walkways that draw the landscape into the daily experience of the home. This layout allows for clear zoning, with dedicated areas for sleeping, socialising, and retreat.

Embracing the Site: Views, Light, and Orientation

The arrangement of the pavilions responds directly to the site's soft contours and natural light. Openings are carefully placed to frame views across the property and to the surrounding bushland, while outdoor spaces are nestled between volumes, offering sheltered areas for gathering and reflection.

Material Palette: Classic, Durable, and Low Maintenance

The choice of materials was guided by durability, simplicity, and a desire to blend with the rural context. Solid masonry walls, standing seam metal roofs, and warm timber detailing create a grounded, timeless presence in the landscape. These materials will weather naturally over time, softening the home's edges and enhancing its relationship with the environment.
